FORMER SECTIONS OF THE TOWNSHIP OF OCEAN

Former Sections of the Township of Ocean - Asbury Park - Part VI - The Coleman House

Asbury Park was originally incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 26, 1874, from portions of Ocean Township. The borough was reincorporated on February 28, 1893. Asbury Park was incorporated as a city, its current type of government, as of March 25, 1897.

One of Asbury Park's original hotels was the Coleman House, which opened in 1879, and was one of the first big hotels in the city. It was built for Sarah Coleman, and located on the corner of Asbury Avenue and Kingsley Avenue, where the Empress Hotel now stands.  It featured a bowling alley and ballroom and hosted Presidents Herbert Hoover, Ulysses Grant, and Woodrow Wilson.  The Coleman House was torn down in January 1934.
