Asbury Park was originally incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 26, 1874, from portions of Ocean Township. The borough was reincorporated on February 28, 1893. Asbury Park was incorporated as a city, its current type of government, as of March 25, 1897.
The Metropolitan Hotel was a 180-room historic structure located on Asbury Avenue and Heck Avenue and was the last of the old hotels operating in Asbury Park. The original Metropolitan was built in the 1880s. It was replaced with the structure everyone remembers in 1900.
The Metropolitan Hotel was on the Monmouth County Register of Historic Buildings. Nevertheless, it was demolished in March of 2008.
